Earth Day: Do we need this wake-up call, asks Balraj Syal

Actor and comedian Balraj Sayal says that taking care of Mother Earth is something that should have been taught to us right from our childhood. It needs to be done all day, every day and not just on Earth Day, he says.

“I feel very bad that something which should be part of our daily life has been forgotten to such an extent that we have to allot one day in a year for it. Taking care of our Mother Earth should be one of our moral values, it should have been inculcated in our upbringing. As the world is celebrating Earth Day today, I just want to ask if we really need this wake-up call once a year?” he says.

He adds, “Global warming has increased, and we are in this situation today because of the habits that we have inculcated and our lifestyle, due to which global warming is increasing which harms both us and Mother Nature.”

Balraj stresses the fact that when we help mother Earth, we actually help ourselves as well. He says, “Drinking water in plastic bottles harms us as well as mother nature. Spreading dirt harms us and Mother Nature too. By planting trees around, we also get good oxygen, we get good air, besides getting to sit in the shade of the tree. Earlier, there used to be trees on both sides, so we didn’t have to walk in the sun. But today, the trees have been cut and so there are cars everywhere. Many skin problems are also caused due to direct sunlight. Keeping wet and dry waste separate is important, not only for us but for everyone. Sometimes a piece of glass is put in the garbage, due to which a sanitation worker may get hurt, the animals who eat from this garbage can get hurt as well. One wrong habit is causing damage to the whole earth. It’s so important to make proper use of water and electricity.”
