#NationalTechnologyDay: Celebs on the boon and bane of mobile phones, internet

The one thing that changed human lives the most is technology. In today’s world, we can not possibly think of surviving without lights, fans, phones, vehicles and so on and so forth. National Technology Day on May 11 highlights the contribution of various stalwarts in the field of science and technology. Amid all the celebration and appreciation, one thing also comes to the fore is how we have been using technology. The point is, that any sort of advancement becomes either a boon or bane depending on our usage. Celebrities weigh in on the debate as far as mobile phone and the internet are concerned and share their opinion:

It is bane as well as a boon for sure. We know that now all things, including human beings, are just a click away. Connectivity is no more a concern. Having said that, where are the days when we truly met someone in person and wished him or her. These days a child who can’t even speak properly demands an iPad or a mobile phone. Luxuries are becoming necessities now. Don’t know where the future generation is headed. It’s very dicey. I believe parents’ upbringing plays a major role here.

I feel life is easy now because of mobile phones and the Internet as we do not need to step out to buy groceries, medicine, clothes and anything essential. I do not need to go out to take care of the family.

Technology is a way forward, it means everything today. It’s a boon more than a bane. It saves time and it has made the office and work mobile and easy. It has helped a lot of people save time and was the biggest support during the lockdown. Knowledge and information are now just a click away. The sad part is that scamming has become a common thing, which is wrong. I am a firm believer in progress, and technology is progress. But then at the same time, I won’t deny, neither support the abuse of technology in any way.

Technology has changed everything for everyone. From the youngest to the eldest, everyone now has to be on their phones and stay connected. I personally feel sad that phones have taken a big part of our social life. People don’t meet and have normal conversations anymore. Kids are all connected through their tabs. Where is the time when kids used to play in the gardens and not be bothered about phone notifications? Weren’t we happier without phones or social media? I remember if the phone in my house rang after 8.30 pm, only my parents would not pick up! We would all have dinner together without interruption. I also remember spending the most time outside with my friends playing soccer or on my cycle. But we had no phones at all and didn’t need one either! I miss those times the most. But of course I understand the fact that now everything is through connection and technology. And, the fact that there is good and bad to everything.

Our lives have changed because what used to take hours to do is now done in minutes. If you have to send a letter, you can email it today or send a message. Time is saved, and everything is done sitting at home. Earlier, the whole day was spent working. Banking facilities have also become good due to internet banking. Everything has come in the form of an app on our phone, which we can do to analyse all the things by ourselves. Being digital, nothing can be hidden anymore. A lot has changed in life and this change is necessary.

Technology has definitely changed a lot of things in life. The greatest movie we have ever made in India was Mughal-E-Azam and there was no technology at that time when this film was made. Even though I feel Sholay is the most successful Hindi film ever made, there was no technology at all, no internet, no good quality cameras. We were a very deprived bunch of people who didn’t have any kind of technology. Hollywood has been very innovative and lucky they have come up with a lot of new technology but we always struggled. 20- 30 years ago we didn’t even have a monitor, we used to struggle a lot to check if we got the right shot or not. Now we are struggling for quality so much content is created these days. We still managed to make films like Mughal-E-Azam and Mother India. At that time, Mother India was nominated for Oscars as well. Technology is fine to make money but humanity should not be compromised in the process because technology can create artificial intelligence and can create robots and we can go to Mars but that’s not going to enhance the quality of humanity. We always need people like APJ Abdul Kalam who are so honest. Everything about him was so human, so touching. So, we need such characters in our life. Technology will come on its own. There is science. There are scientists who are working day and night and seeing great things happening in life. I welcome all the inventions and I salute all the scientists of the world.

On this day, I would like to congratulate everybody who has given us technology. We started with the Internet today. We are at 5G. It’s a blessing in many ways. It’s easy to connect with people personally as well as professionally. Apart from that, the cases of fraud which were happening earlier have decreased a lot because mostly we put all the information on the internet. You can check the profile of the company in which you are going to enter into an agreement with them much before now. If there is a boon, there has to be a bane. We have to be extra careful when we serve the sites. We should check the background of the person before talking with them on the internet. We should not fall in any kind of a trap or create trouble for ourselves or our family members. Apart from that, I think that because technology is so easily available we are misusing it these days. We don’t know when to put a stop button to that. We keep involving ourselves in the internet because of which our family time, my time and quality time get disturbed. We, as responsible individuals, should know when to put a full stop on the use of the internet and technology. Otherwise, I think the internet has given lots and lots of opportunities for everybody right from students to professionals to senior citizens to explore the world to connect with new people. Learn how to put a full stop and use your intelligence while surfing the sites.

I think as with everything else, it depends on our choices as human beings. Of course, technology has made the world progress and removed inequality and poverty. It’s wonderful that everyone has a mobile nowadays. It is good for the film industry that there is a screen in every hand. If human beings make the wrong decisions and use it incorrectly, then obviously it’s a bane. But, if used well, it’s a huge boon and there will be more progress in the next 50 years. I am hoping the next generation will use it wisely and do something good with it
